Now you see it, now you don't

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Wednesday, June 26, 2013,

Hey, we all have our much-deserved dumbass moments. After more than twelve years of doing this for a living I still have mine. I actually had one right here (above). See how nicely I framed the shot, with the windsock growing out of the top of his head? Yes. I know. How did I not notice that..?

Anyway after I stopped kicking myself I fired up After Effects and opened up the paint tools. The repair is, fortunately, absolutely spotless.

Put yourself in our picture

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Wednesday, May 22, 2013,

I recently completed this promo for NWU Vaal Triangle Campus's Faculty of Economic Sciences and IT. It builds on work I've done previously for the NWU. I again relied heavily on my two favourite creative applications: Adobe After Effects and Avid Media Composer.

I approached this one by starting at the end - the word "proud". The Faculty’s initial project brief supplied me with a few terms and phrases used in their current marketing, such as "We are proud and preferred" and "Put yourself i...

It all starts here - the 2013 NWU promo

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Tuesday, April 16, 2013,

I had the privilege of creating an "official" NWU promo in 2011. So when the folks at NWU Institutional Advancement phoned me up a while ago to ask for a new one I was overjoyed to have an opportunity to try and see if I could come up with something completely new and original. The NWU's CID had changed since 2011 and there was now a new payoff line and a brand new set of design elements and visual style to play with. The clip was originally created for and shown for the first time at ...

Give your footage the Instagram look

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Friday, July 6, 2012,

Above: Background elements in this clip were given the DFT Film Stocks treatment to meet the latest NWU visual language requirements. View the full clip on YouTube

The NWU is one of my major clients and they recently changed their visual communication style to a modern contemporary "light and airy" look. Achieving what is basically a stylized "Instagram" look in future video projects through ordinary colour correction tools would take hours so it made sense to look at a serious colour grading...

Creating Iron Man's HUD in After Effects (provideocoalition.com)

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, June 16, 2012,

I've always been a big fan of Adobe After Effects. The first version I ever used was 6.0 and AE has been a part of just about every video and multimedia production I've completed since then. I also happen to be a big fan of all things comic book and superhero related (c'mon, who wouldn't be?). After Effects was used extensively in the new Avengers movie to create Iron Man's high tech HUD. Check it out

Getting serious about 3D - Zaxwerks 3D 5.0

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, October 22, 2011,

I've been using the Zaxwerks 3D plug-in about as long as I've been using Adobe After Effects. The first version I ever installed came bundled with After Effects 6 - I remember I almost threw away the disk along with the empty AE packaging, thinking it was just more of the ultimately useless software that vendors seem to cram into the packaging of just about everything you buy nowadays.

But I quickly discovered that it is a very powerful weapon to have in your motion graphics arsenal. Zaxwerks-...

Make those blocks move - creating the new NWU promo

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, August 25, 2011,

I recently completed a promo clip for the friendly folks at the NWU's corporate communications department. The project brief called for an effects clip that tie closely into current corporate identity graphic design. I love FX work and this project was right up my alley even if the deadline was desperately tight - only five working days available from the first phone call to the delivery of the final video media in multiple consumer formats!

Technical projects like these seriously appeal t...
